Brief Legislative Update
Ohio lawmakers passed Senate Joint Resolution 2, which will require a special election to be held on August 8, 2023, for the purpose of amending our state constitution to change the process for constitutional amendments.
There are currently two ways our state constitution may be amended. One is through the approval of a joint resolution by the General Assembly. The other is through a citizen initiative (signature petitions). SJR2 would change the process for citizen initiatives and would change the ballot approval threshold for either method from a simple majority (50%+1) to a supermajority (60%).
There will be plenty of time between now and August 8 to present the pros and cons of this proposed constitutional change. For now, we are providing links to the text of the resolution and the vote record for your review. When reading the resolution, only the underlined language is new, and the language stricken is being repealed.
